I’m Jamie Bozzi of SMRTDog.com and we’re here at Dog Beach in Ocean Beach in beautiful San Diego, California. Today I’m going to be discussing how to choose a dog for an active lifestyle. And by active lifestyle, we mean a single person living alone who exercises frequently.
Active Dog Breeds
All dogs require physical and mental stimulation. However, these breeds especially love to keep active; Vizsla, Weimaraner, German Short-haired Pointer, and many of the Terrier breeds like Jack Russell’s. In addition, there are many other breeds from the sporting and working dog categories that also enjoy an active lifestyle.
For those of you, who enjoy traveling, consider one of the smaller breeds who are also active. Terriers are dogs from the Terrier group make a good choice. Active and athletic breeds generally do well with owners who enjoy outdoor activities, such as running, hiking, and swimming.
Active Dogs Still Need Rest
But keep in mind; all active dogs need downtime as well. Remember, there are many breeds to choose from and many breeds that will suit an active lifestyle. However, make sure that you balance high impact activity with adequate amounts of rest. Mental stimulation is just as important as physical exercise. And that’s how to choose a dog for an active lifestyle.
